LEVITT COHN, February 5, 1999 The President today announced his intent to appoint Betsy Levitt Cohn, Cynthia Friedman, Alice Kendell, Hilary Rosen and Howard A. Tullman as Members of the President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities. Ms. Betsy Levitt Cohn, of New York City, New York, is a retired executive from the advertising and entertainment fields. Originally employed in 1959 as a secretary at Kenyon & Eckhardt Advertising, she rose into the management ranks, first as Head of Casting and then as Director of Public Relations. In 1975, Ms. Cohn joined Paramount Pictures as Director of Marketing (Non-Theatrical), then became a Consultant for Showtime from 1977 through 1982, and was Director of Pay TV MGM/UA from 1982 until her retirement in 1986. In the non-profit sector, Ms. Cohn has served in a number of leadership roles, including the Volunteer Council of the New York Philharmonic, where she oversaw the Philharmonic in Central Park program, and she serves on the Board of Directors of New Dramatists, the Lincoln Center Theater Patron Committee and Co-Chaired the Lincoln Center Jazz Benefit. She received her B.S. from Syracuse University. Ms. Cynthia Friedman, of Chevy Chase, Maryland, is co-owner and member of the Board of Directors of the Union Real Estate Company of Pittsburgh. Previously, she was Vice President of Emglo Products in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Ms. Friedman has also served as National Chair of the Women's Leadership Forum of the Democratic National Committee and on the Boards of Directors of the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art in Pennsylvania and the Johnstown Symphony Orchestra. Both organizations provide a high quality of cultural outreach into smaller communities in Western Pennsylvania. She also provided the leadership to raise the necessary funds and spearhead the restoration of Johnstown's historic railway station. Ms. Friedman also serves on the Board of Directors of Ballet Florida and the Collectors Committee of the National Gallery of Art. She received a B.S. in Psychology, with a Minor in Fine Arts from the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Alice Kendell, of New York City, New York, is a child psychologist formerly affiliated with Mt. Sinai Hospital. Additionally, Dr. Kendell is an author and professional photographer, having published books on subjects ranging from Mountaintop Kingdom: Sikkim to children's books such as Max the Music Maker and Ben's ABC Day. Dr. Kendell is also Vice President of the Board of the International League for Human Rights and President of the International Vocal Arts Institute, whose faculty is affiliated with the Metropolitan Opera. She also performs in non-singing roles with the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Dr. Kendell was a participant in President Clinton! s November 1997 retreat at Amelia Island, discussing children in the arts and is a member of the Presidents Circle of the National Academy of Sciences. She received her Doctorate in Child Psychology from Harvard University. Ms. Hilary B. Rosen, of Chevy Chase, Maryland, is President and Chief Executive Officer of the Recording Industry Association of America, a trade association with more than 350 member companies responsible for creating, manufacturing, or distributing 90 percent of all legitimate sound recordings sold in the U.S. She is also a founder and board member of Rock the Vote, an organization encouraging young people to become more involved in the political process. Ms. Rosen serves on many non-profit boards including LifeBeat, The Human Rights Campaign Foundation, the National Music Council, the National Advisory Council for Artists for a Hate Free America, Y.E.S. to Jobs and the National Cancer Foundation. Previously in her career, she was a Vice-President for the lobbying firm of Liz Robbins Associates, and worked for former Governor Brendan Byrne (D-NJ) and on the transition teams of Senators Bill Bradley (D-NJ) and Feinstein (D-CA). Ms. Rosen studied international business at George Washington University. Mr. Howard A. Tullman, of Chicago, Illinois, is the Chairman and CEO, and one of the founders of JAMtv Corporation, which operates music mega-sites on the Internet. Previously, Mr. Tullman was President and CEO of Imagination Pilots, Inc., a multimedia software developer specializing in CD-ROM games, including Blown Away, Eraser, Panic in the Park, Where's Waldo? at the World Wide Games, and SNAP's Math Parade. Earlier, he founded a number of companies involved in providing computerized services and databases to businesses, educational institutions and consumers. Mr. Tullman also teaches an MBA class called "Start-Ups: Start to Finish" and lectures regularly on venturing and entrepreneurship at the J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University. He is also an active art collector, lender and donor to museums, including the Smart Museum of Art of the University of Chicago, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Chicago Children's Museum and the Milwaukee Art Museum. Mr. Tullman received his B.A. from Northwestern University and his J.D. from the same institution's School of Law. The President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities was established in order to advise the President, the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities concerning ways to promote private sector support for the arts and the humanities, especially at the state and local level. 30-30-30 |
