CD ROM configuration for Eraser Turnabout
Eraser-Turnabout is a full 32 bit Windows 95 application. As a result, there are operating incompatibilities with older 16 bit DOS CD-ROM drivers. Certain computer manufacturers still include these older CD-ROM drivers in their configurations. If Eraser-Turnabout fails to play properly (i.e. freezes during movies or fails to load sounds), you will need to install the Windows 95 32 bit CD-ROM drivers and deactivate the old 16 bit DOS drivers by observing the following steps:

1. Check to see if the 32 bit drivers have been installed (but are not being used).

  • Press Start.
  • Choose Settings, Control Panels, System.
  • Choose the Device Manager tab.
  • If there is a CDROM entry under Computer, the 32 bit driver is installed. Skip to step 3
  • If the 32 bit drivers are not installed, you need to install the Windows 95 CD-ROM 32 bit drivers and remove the 16 bit drivers.

    2. Installing Windows 95 32 bit CD-ROM drivers.

  • Press Start.
  • Choose Settings, Control Panels, Add New Hardware
  • Click on Next,
  • Respond 'Yes' to 'Do You Want Windows to Search for your new hardware?'
    (Windows will search for new hardware. This may take a few minutes. Follow the instruction in order to install the CD ROM and its drivers. The CD ROM player must be 'Plug and Play' in order for Windows 95 to properly sense the type and determine the necessary drivers to install. You may need a Windows 95 CD-ROM in order to load the CD-ROM drivers if the Windows 95 source files were not preloaded on the hard drive.)

    3. Deactivate old 16 bit CD-ROM drivers and correct the Autoexec.bat.

  • From Windows 95, using NotePad, check the c:\autoexec.bat file.
  • Search for an occurrence of 'MSCDEX'. If it is present, place 'REM' at the beginning of the line that contains it.

    4. Fix the file Config.sys.

  • From Windows 95, using NotePad, check the c:\autoexec.bat file.
  • Search for an occurrence of 'Atapi'. If it is present, place 'REM' at the beginning of the line that contains it.

    5. Restart the computer.

    6. Check if Windows 95 32 bit drivers are working.

  • When Windows 95 returns, double-click on 'My Computer'. If the CD- ROM Icon appears, you can play Eraser-Turnabout without problems. If not, you need to install the Windows 95 CD-ROM drivers as specified by the manufacturer.

    DirectX™ Problems with Eraser-Turnabout
    General DirectX™ Issues: DirectX™ is a games API designed to provide an excellent games interface as well as hardware compatibility. At this time, there are still many hardware manufacturers whose products do not support DirectX™. If any of the hardware you are using does not work properly with DirectX™, please check with the manufacturer of your hardware about obtaining updated drivers that fully support Windows 95 and DirectX™.

    In order for Eraser-Turnabout to run correctly, three of the DirectX™ drivers (DirectDraw™, DirectSound™ and Audio driver) be installed and "Certified". You can check if this is the case, by:

  • Run Dxsetup.exe from Eraser Disc 1 in the Directx directory. A dialog box titled "DirectX™ setup" will pop up, containing a list of all Direct™ Components, Versions, and whether each component is Certified or not.
  • If componemts DirectDraw™, DirectSound™ and Audio driver are not marked as certified, Eraser-Turnabout will not run correctly. You must contact the manufacturer of your computer, who will assist you with getting DirectX™ properly installed on your computer. This will most likely mean that you will have to update the appropriate driver(s).

    Known Specific DirectX™ Issues:
    Problem: Which video cards do not support DirectX™?
    Solution: The following video cards DO NOT support DirectX™:

  • Early versions of the STB powergraph 64 video card with the S3 Trio64V+ Chipset, Number Nine GXE Video Card or a Number Nine Imagine 128.
    NOTE: If you have an STB video card with the S3 chipset it is important that you obtain the latest BIOS upgrade and video drivers for your card. Older BIOS versions and video drives may result in a conflict. STB can be contacted by phone at (214) 669-0989.

    Problem: What if my video card does not support DirectX™?
    Solution: Installation of DirectX™ the above mentioned chipsets may result in video driver corruption. If this happens, you may need to reinstall Windows 95 to restore the video driver. Please consult with your computer vendor before attempting to reinstall your video card drivers or Windows 95. Users of this chipset may still run Eraser, but without DirectX. Please continue to check with your video card manufacturer for updated drivers.

    Problem: I have a Diamond Stealth 3D 2000 or similar video card based on the S3 Virge Chipset. When I installed DirectX™ 3, Eraser Turnabout only displayed only a black screen.
    Solution: You need to get new Virge Chipset Drivers from S3 Inc. Then follow the instructions provided with the drivers to install them.
