Chicago area collector Howard A. Tullman, whose interests in contemporary realism, self-taught artists, and the Chicago area art scene
have produced a distinguished private collection, has generously donated the work of two important American artists to the museum's
permanent collection. The vibrant compositions of Tom Wesselman first appeared as scultural tableaus in the 1960s, when he introduced
his own particular sensibility to the Pop imagery of the era and its reintroduction of realism into the American scene, albeit one
much influenced by consumerism and advertising. Martha Mayer Erlebacher's exquisite drawing represents her commitment to the power
of realism for which she has become well known in the contemporary art world.
These gifts were faciliated by Susan Gescheidle (Director) of Chicago's gescheidle gallery. Having visited the museum last fall and
being suitably impressed with the new facility, she made it a point to put us in contact with Mr. Tullman. It is one of the many
unexpected kindnesses that are needed to help add noteworthy American artists to the collection.
